Walnut Creek Community Info

Walnut Creek is a compact city in Contra Costa County, California, located about 16 miles east of the city of Oakland in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's home to approximately 68,000 residents who enjoy easy access to the entire East Bay region via the I-680, SR-24, and the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, a.k.a. BART.

Walnut Creek was officially founded in 1862 with the establishment of a United States Post Office; prior to that, the area was simply called "The Corners". It was quickly nicknamed "Nuts Creek" by locals, and with the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1981, the area quickly expanded to become a hub of commerce.

Today, Walnut Creek is a thriving blend of historical and modern buildings, upscale shops, stunning homes, and a non-stop schedule of family-friendly events.

Walnut Creek residents enjoy moderate temperatures throughout the year, making it easy to get outside and enjoy the beautiful parks, trails, and views. The summer months are dry and pleasantly hot, with highs reaching around 88 degrees. During the winter, temps rarely dip below freezing, meaning you won't need to reach for your parka here!

Walnut Creek is filled with distinct neighborhoods that feature a wide variety of historic properties, factory conversions, and condo developments. Located on the south side of Walnut Creek is Parkmead, a family-friendly community that's filled with sprawling single-story ranch homes, schools, and parks that are within an easy walk of the city center.

Right in the heart of downtown is the Almond-Shuey neighborhood, which is filled with a diverse collection of empty-nesters, young families, and seniors who live in pre-WWII houses, apartments, and townhomes. To the south lies Rudgear Estates, a 429-home neighborhood constructed in 1973 that offers easy access to green space, hiking trails, and an active homeowners' association.

There are over 20 schools in Walnut Creek, and all the public schools are a part of either the Mt. Diablo Unified School District of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. Students in both public systems consistently achieve higher than average scores in statewide testing across all subjects, and one of the highest rated is Walnut Heights Elementary.

Walnut Creek is a popular destination among both Bay Area locals and tourists alike, thanks to the eclectic variety of activities, events, and attractions here. Broadway Plaza is home to over 35 stores including Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, while Main Street is filled with independent retailers, galleries, and boutiques.

There's over 100 restaurants, bistros, and nightclubs within the city limits, making Walnut Creek a food lover's' paradise. The Boundary Creek Golf Course is a great place to hit the greens, while the city is connected to an extensive network of well-marked hiking and cycling trails that traverse the local foothills.
